Emilie Myth runs for Office
Hi, I’m Emilie Myth, and I am running for a seat on the Saddle Mountain Unified School District board. I’ve lived in Tartesso for five years (and I love it here!)
What does a board member do?
A board member works with the four other board members to revise policy and curriculum (within what the law allows) and revises what students must do to move up a grade and graduate. The board also approves budgets. The board hires the superintendent, evaluates that person, and sets the rules for how teachers and principals are evaluated and disciplined. The board ensures students are kept safe and makes sure every child with a disability gets the services they need. But the board cannot build a new school or buy land on its own — voters have to approve those decisions. (A.R.S. § 15-341)
What are my qualifications?
I am a data engineer. That means I’m comfortable processing and explaining complex data sets, like a budget. I’ve been on a board of directors before and understand how public meetings work. I am also nosy and like finding out how things work and asking the questions others don’t want to.
What is my experience with Saddle Mountain?
I don’t have children of my own. I am not a teacher. My experience with the district is going to informational meetings held at various schools.
What does a board member get paid?
$0- this is an unpaid position.
Since I get no pay and I have no children, why run for office?
I was educated at schools that were paid for my neighbors and people I never met. I want to pay that forward by doing my part to ensure our children have the best education we can give them.
How am I financing my campaign?
I am funding my campaign all by myself. I don’t expect it to cost that much, and it will also make me less beholden to any interests other than what is best for our children.
If elected, what would I change?
To be honest, I don’t have the mindset that I can swoop in and ‘fix’ everything. (See the limited powers of board members above.) My first task would be to learn everything I can about the district (again, I’m nosy and will poke around). I don’t want to promise you anything without knowing the facts first. Gathering those facts takes time. I want our children to receive the best education we can give them, so that will be my focus.
When is the election?
November 3rd, 2026. You can check your voting status at Arizona.vote.
